Description

Educational Need

Injury is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, resulting in more than 30 million emergency department visits and 2.5 million inpatient admissions each year. Up to 70% of trauma patients require consultation for orthopaedic injuries, and the management of orthopaedic injuries is an essential component of high-quality trauma care. In addition to reducing injury mortality, orthopaedic trauma care is important for optimized long-term functional recovery, which is highly correlated with health-related quality of life following musculoskeletal injury.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe commonly associated pathology surrounding the polytrauma patient.
  2. Identify the symptoms and treatment of compartment syndrome.
  3. Describe the Gustilo – Anderson classification of open fractures and antibiotic management.
  4. Review common complications of delayed hip fracture management.
