Description
Educational Need
Injury is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, resulting in more than 30 million emergency department visits and 2.5 million inpatient admissions each year. Up to 70% of trauma patients require consultation for orthopaedic injuries, and the management of orthopaedic injuries is an essential component of high-quality trauma care. In addition to reducing injury mortality, orthopaedic trauma care is important for optimized long-term functional recovery, which is highly correlated with health-related quality of life following musculoskeletal injury.
Learning Objectives
- Describe commonly associated pathology surrounding the polytrauma patient.
- Identify the symptoms and treatment of compartment syndrome.
- Describe the Gustilo – Anderson classification of open fractures and antibiotic management.
- Review common complications of delayed hip fracture management.
