Abstract
The idea for this capstone topic started with a strong interest in working with the older adult population and a desire to assist with the promotion of quality of life through access to information and services. The physical, social, and emotional changes that occur in late adulthood have, unfortunately, contributed to its characterization as a phase of life that involves decline and loss, which is simply the wrong approach to use. A false perception of old age is becoming reality only because people aren’t being empowered with knowledge of productive aging strategies. Productive aging is a multidimensional concept that considers how factors including health and well-being, occupational engagement, and self-perception can be leveraged to improve the aging experience and dispel the idea that aging is only a process of decline and loss of function.
This capstone project aimed to provide programming and resources to support older adults and caregivers in navigating the changes associated with aging to help them take advantage of the benefits of productive aging. The resources provided through this project’s work will offer guidance to older adults and caregivers interested in planning how they want to spend the later stages of life. These needs fall within the occupational therapy scope of practice which includes the promotion of health and wellness as well as community-based intervention. By providing holistic and client-centered care focused around productive aging, this capstone will adhere to the occupational therapy core values of dignity, justice, and freedom.
