Abstract
During my doctoral capstone experience, I served as a member of the Behavior Intervention Team under the mentorship of Laura Rodgers. In this role, I collaborated on reviewing referrals and open concerns for children across all Drake University Head Start locations, including those related to potential needs for an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP).
In addition to case review and problem-solving support, I developed and delivered professional development presentations for teachers, classroom staff, and Family Engagement Specialists (FES). These sessions emphasized practical, evidence-based strategies to strengthen children’s participation and regulation both at school and at home.
A core component of my project involved integrating occupational therapy–based activities into classrooms using the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework. This work included implementing Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 supports tailored to classroom contexts and individual student needs. I also assisted in incorporating the S.M.A.R.T. (Stimulating Maturity through Accelerated Readiness Training) curriculum into three classrooms, ensuring alignment with the existing play-based curriculum used by Drake University Head Start.
To promote long-term sustainability, I created clear, accessible resources and tools that staff can continue to use beyond the duration of my capstone. Collectively, this work strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration, expanded access to occupational therapy based practices, and supported improved regulation, school readiness, and engagement for children across the program.
