Abstract

Introduction: promote accessibility and inclusion in an overlooked area for in occupational therapy (OT), and increase knowledge of The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Objectives:

  1. Create and disseminate sensory-friendly activities to promote inclusion for passengers with disabilities.
  2. Engage in an 18-hour continuing education course to obtain a certificate in Disability Inclusion & Accessible Design and disseminate a presentation of the course to staff.

  3. Promote advocacy and awareness for sailors with disabilities by conducting videos on the cruise showcasing accessibility on the ship.

  4. Complete the cruise lines training that encompasses inclusivity to promote both an inclusive and accessible cruise.

  5. Create sensory supports (e.g., sensory bags, body sock, weighted lap pad) on each of the ships for sailors with sensory differences.

  6. Conduct and disseminate a survey to assess the passenger’s perception of accessibility and inclusion of sensory-friendly activities during the cruise.

  7. Complete the Autism and Neurodiversity Awareness Training to improve knowledge and advocacy to promote accessibility and inclusion for neurodivergent sailors on cruise ships.

  8. Complete a 40-credit hour Great Plains ADA Coordinator Training Certification Program to assist with disseminating educational materials to sailors with disabilities and staff.
