Abstract

Healthcare can be enhanced through what is called interprofessional education (IPE) which involves students from diverse educational backgrounds learning alongside each other and from one another about how everyone can contribute to providing the highest quality patient care.1

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is defined by an interruption of breathing during sleep due to the closing or narrowing of the respiratory passages.2 Fatigue, abrupt awakening, difficulty concentrating, trouble staying away during the day, and gasping for air while asleep are all common symptoms of OSA.2 Treatment of OSA differs depending on the severity, but continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and oral appliances (OA) are the two most common treatment modalities.3

This project’s goal was to create an IPE event about OSA to improve care provided to patients with this condition. I chose this topic because many people in my life are affected by OSA and they struggle with understanding the importance of seeking and adhering to treatment. Implementing an IPE event on OSA is one way to make a drastic change in the quality of care given to patients struggling with this condition.

Research Question: The question guiding this project was how can IPE improve care provided to patients with OSA? This project aimed to answer this question by evaluating how IPE can enhance patient care provided by a healthcare team and approaches to improving treatment of OSA.
