Abstract
Completed doctoral capstone project at High Country Adaptive Sports
Community based occupational therapy (OT)
Developed and implemented 4 week “Pathway to Independence (PTI)” program focusing on independence to support athlete’s sustained participation in adaptive sports specifically in skiing.
Created a sustainable PTI implementation manual for future instructors to utilize and improve program carryover.
Designed an evidence-based program promoting:
- Independence
- Self-efficacy
- Accessibility and inclusion
- Decrease barriers
- Increase sustained participation
- Developed infographics and handouts easy to understand and utilize by the staff and volunteers to enhance skills and abilities when working with athletes with disabilities
- Addressed various aspects of OT outside of just ski progression and performance on the slopes including: • Environmental barriers • Accessibility needs • Athlete confidence and education
Five objectives were developed and achieved to enhance OT practice within a community-based adaptive sports setting. Capstone centered around four focus areas: clinical skills, program development, advocacy, and education.
Clinical skills:
- Expanded hands-on work with diverse groups of individuals with disabilities
- Applied OT principles to improve participation, independence and confidence in adaptive sports
- Strengthened activity adaption
Program Development:
- Developed and implemented adaptive sports program focusing on independence and inclusion
- Contributed to improving adaptive materials and resources for kids with cognitive disabilities
- Supported creating an environment available for all to participate in.
Advocacy:
- Increased awareness for patients and their families about the opportunities within the community for adaptive sports.
Education:
- Educated staff, volunteers, and community members on role of OT in recreational sports
- Developed resources focused on disability awareness and adaptive strategies.
