Abstract
A common barrier to occupational therapy (OT)practice in the NICU is the lack of efficient standardized assessments for occupational performance and developmental milestones
- Barriers -time, medical status, state of alertness, etc.
The use of standardized assessments in OT practice is the preferred method to provide objective data of occupational performance (AOTA, 2020)
- Justify need for services, establish a baseline, track intervention effectiveness
Another barrier in the NICU setting are the delays in the referral and initiation of early intervention (EI) services (Nwabaraet al., 2016).The lack of standardized assessments in the NICU may be contributing to the common delays in EI services (Gower et al., 2018).
Parents of infants in the NICU report that it is often hard to notice progress that their infant is making.
