Abstract
Rheumatologic diseases frequently present with cutaneous manifestations that precede systemic involvement.1,2 Conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriatic arthritis, dermatomyositis, and systemic sclerosis often manifest first through skin, nail, or vascular changes.
Dermatologic findings are commonly underrecognized or misattributed to benign conditions, resulting in delayed diagnosis, delayed referral, and delayed initiation of disease-modifying therapy.1,3 Diagnostic delays contribute to irreversible organ damage, increased morbidity, and diminished quality of life.3,4
Primary care providers and dermatology providers are often the first clinicians to evaluate these patients, positioning them to play a critical role in early detection and referral.
