Abstract

Project Goal

The goal of my project is to advocate for required human trafficking (HT) education and training to physician assistants in Iowa.

Why It Matters

This topic is significant because human trafficking continues to rapidly rise each year and victims commonly seek help in healthcare settings. Healthcare providers are in a key position to intervene.

This topic became increasingly important to me as I learned more about human trafficking and recognized gaps in both my PA education and clinical training experiences. I observed that many providers had limited knowledge of the topic or did not view it as clinically relevant, which further reinforced my interest in improving education and awareness in healthcare settings.

Gap

While training opportunities on HT exist, there is no standardization of training for healthcare providers. Additionally, because education requirements are determined at the state level, training varies widely across states and programs.

Research Question

The question guiding my initial research was if human trafficking education should be required and standardized for healthcare workers. I developed a literature review examining the rising prevalence of human trafficking and how additional training enhances healthcare workers’ ability to identify and support victims.

Action

To address gaps in human trafficking education for healthcare workers, I advocated for mandatory training for physician assistants in Iowa through legislative change, using my research and Iowa-specific data to support a letter submitted to the Iowa PA Society.
