Abstract
Acne vulgar is a common dermatologic condition that affects adolescents and adults. It is known to derived from four different mechanisms: 1. increase in sebum secretion from sebaceous glands, 2. impaired follicular keratinization, 3. Cutibacteriumacne (C. acnes) bacteria accumulation., and 4. inflamed pilosebaceous units.
Acne can impact people both physically and psychologically, prompting them to seek treatment. In Western medicine, topical pharmacological therapies are commonly prescribed. In contrast, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) emphasizes on holistic before prescribing medication. Acupuncture was slowly introduced to the field of Dermatology, by promoting circulation through a single poke in different areas of the body.
The aim of this project is to explore the effectiveness of acupuncture on acne. To address the research questions—Is acupuncture an effective acne treatment? Is there a specific type of acupuncture that works better? Is it better as monotherapy or as an adjunct therapy?—a comprehensive literature review was conducted.
In clinical practice, acupuncture can be offered if patient continues to struggle with acne despite pharmacological therapies. It can also be offered to patients who seeks holistic and slow treatment of acne. As a future provider, it is one of my priorities to make patients feel safe and seen with their acne. It can have a debilitating effect on their self-image and confidence, and I would want patients to feel comfortable in their own skin and provide them with effective treatments.
