Skin in the Game: Strategies to Promote Sunscreen and Skin Protection in Men

Abstract

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with the biggest risk factor being UV exposure. Despite this knowledge and consistent public health messaging, sunscreen use is inconsistent particularly among men. This disconnect identifies a gap as to why these individuals continue with these behaviors of inadequate sun protection despite knowledge of risks.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate behaviors, perceived risk, sunscreen use, and barriers among men to identify avenues of potential interventions to increase sunscreen use in men.

I chose this topic because of my interest in dermatology and from witnessing the number of patients with preventable skin cancers on my dermatology rotation, further emphasizing the importance of prevention, which I wanted to research more about as I saw a gap in this.

This study is relevant to dermatology and general providers in prevention, as understanding barriers to sunscreen use can improve education and counseling practices.
