Abstract

Previously worked in surgery, and saw surgeons cancel cases because patients were smoking, while others would still operate.

The general side effects and health consequences of smoking cigarettes are well known, but not the implications they may have for an invasive procedure are not widely known.

This project is a literature review that explored the reasons why smoking cessation is important for surgery specifically and create a patient- friendly handout to be distributed to help increase compliance amongst patients and improve surgical outcomes.
