Abstract
Most medical providers are familiar with Vitamin K, but typically in the context of coagulation
Vitamin K exists in multiple forms: K2- menaquinone-7 (MK-7) plays a much broader role in human physiology
K2 is a key regulator of calcium distribution in the body
Evidence from long-term warfarin use has shown significantly increased vascular calcification in patients.
Chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and gastrointestinal disorders effect many patients- it’s been shown that this single overlooked micronutrient may influence multiple interconnected systems
There remains a clear gap in awareness and clinical application among healthcare providers. Many patients likely have suboptimal K2 levels due to modern diets, altered gut microbiota, or chronic disease states, yet this is rarely assessed in practice.
This capstone aims to bridge the gap by synthesizing current evidence on K2 (MK-7) and translating it into relevant knowledge we can apply in practice. GOAL: highlight how greater awareness and integration of K2 supports more proactive, preventative approaches to care
