Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects about 21 million U.S. adults and can greatly impact daily life and overall well-being.
Many people do not respond fully to treatment, adding to healthcare costs and challenges.
Depression has traditionally been linked to:
- Brain chemical imbalances (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine)
- Low BDNF levels
- Poor stress regulation (HPA axis)
These traditional explanations do not fully explain why symptoms and treatment responses vary between individuals.
New research highlights the gut–brain axis, showing that gut bacteria can affect mood, inflammation, and brain function.
Certain gut bacteria, like Ruminococcaceae, help maintain gut health and may play a role in depression, with diet (Western vs. Mediterranean) influencing their levels.
