The role of the PCP in colorectal cancer prevention

Abstract

This project investigates current trends in colorectal cancer incidence, mortality, and screening.

Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most diagnosed cancer in the United States. While rates of newly diagnosed colorectal cancer overall are declining due to improved screening methods in eligible populations, younger populations are being left vulnerable.

The "gap:" Despite clearly sensitive and specific screening modalities, colorectal cancer is still going undetected in younger populations. This is the gap this project highlighted through research on current rates of colorectal cancer, as well as trends in colorectal cancer screening adherence.

This project's aim was to seek out potential etiologies for the increasing rate of colorectal cancer in younger patients, as well as what strategies PCPs can employ to improve screening adherence and educate on primary prevention of colorectal cancer.

The PA/PCP application: Discussion of proper and timely screening for colorectal cancer is the responsibility of the PCP. Many PAs will go into primary care, making this responsibility a routine part of their everyday practice. Providing tools to not only improve screening adherence but also educate patients on colorectal cancer risk factor reduction will ensure PAs and PCPs are providing up-to-date, quality, preventive care.

Personal significance: As a PA student pursuing a career in primary care, it is of great importance to me to ensure my practice reflects the most up-to-date and accurate recommendations in regard to preventative health. A huge part of my practice will be cancer screening recommendations and counseling on healthy lifestyle to improve patient longevity and quality of life.
