Abstract

Spiritual and cultural beliefs greatly impact healthcare outcomes, as they influence an individual’s insight of illness, may alter their healthcare decisions, and could affect their adherence to treatment.

It is crucial for healthcare providers to understand the beliefs of different minority groups and demonstrate cultural competence when providing care.

In the United States, Islam is the third most common religion1, making it very likely that all healthcare providers will care for a Muslim patient at some point in their careers.

Despite the large population of Muslim patients, many healthcare providers have a gap in knowledge regarding their cultural and spiritual beliefs, which may lead to compromised patient care.

The purpose of this literature review is to analyze existing literature on practices and beliefs of the Muslim population in the United States and strategies for culturally competent care to provide a guide for healthcare providers specifically when treating Muslim patients.

The research question addressed is: What is the impact of cultural and spiritual beliefs on health outcomes among Muslim immigrants, and what strategies can healthcare providers use to deliver culturally inclusive care?
