Abstract

As participation in adolescent, high school, and collegiate sports continues to rise, so does the need to prioritize the health and safety of the athletes involved. The evolving role of women in sports has led to increased involvement of girls at younger ages, longer and more intense training demands, and heightened exposure to unrealistic body image standards. These factors place young female athletes at particular risk for a range of health concerns, including overtraining, psychological stress, and nutritional deficiencies. One critical area of concern is the Female Athlete Triad and its broader counterpart, Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), both of which can have serious short and long-term health implications if left unrecognized or untreated. The Female Athlete Triad is composed of 3 components: low energy availability, menstrual dysfunction, and altered bone mineral density. This project was directed towards understanding the barriers to early identification and utilization of effective treatment strategies in those who have risk factors for the Triad.
