Funding the Advancement of Hands-On POCUS Skills In Undergraduate Medical Education

Abstract
Point-of-care-ultrasound (POCUS) is an essential clinical tool that provides real-time imaging of human anatomy. It enables guided/visualized procedures, rapid patient assessment, diagnostic information, and patient monitoring. POCUS has been widely adopted into many specialties including acute care, OB/GYN, cardiology, and orthopedics. It is well established that POCUS improves patient outcomes1 . However, research showing the value of a rigorous POCUS curriculum in undergraduate medical education (UME) is not widely known.
Research Question: Does the integration of rigorous POCUS curriculum in undergraduate medical education improve patient outcomes in the clinical setting? To answer this question a literature review was performed to analyze to gap between undergraduate POCUS education and patient outcomes.
In addition to answering the question above this project also sought to address one of the major barriers to POCUS access both in education and clinic; cost. We propose grants as a feasible solution and will explore them in further detail.
This project was inspired by personal interests in POCUS and a passion positive patient outcomes.
