Abstract

Exercise has a role in improving many health conditions, both physical and mental. Because of this, exercise therapy has a role in managing conditions as a healthcare provider. Exercise prescription refers to the act of a healthcare provider recommending specific exercise therapy for a patient’s condition.

Current research shows that although many providers are aware of exercise’s benefits in mental health disorders, there is a gap in discussing exercise with patients.1 A common barrier to discussing exercise benefits is the providers’ lack of knowledge on prescribing exercise.

The intent of this project is to educate providers about the importance and specifics of discussing exercise as a lifestyle modification for mental health disorders, specifically Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). The research will focus on the physiology of how exercise is beneficial for MDD and GAD patients and specific exercise to recommend to patients with mental health disorders. Additionally, the project will address how providers can approach these recommendations in a holistic manner and barriers to exercise prescription.
