Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) affects approximately 531 million people worldwide.

Despite a wide range of evidence-based treatment options, only about 25% of patients with T2DM achieve adequate long-term glycemic control.

Inadequate control leads to both physical complications, such as neuropathy or retinopathy, as well as mental burdens for patients, including increased rates of depression.

T2DM represents a major economic burden, with annual costs of approximately $20,000 per patient with T2DM and an estimated $412 billion in U.S healthcare expenditures.

Given its prevalence, clinicians across all specialties (primary care, surgery, women’s health, psychiatry) will encounter patients with T2DM, making this an important topic to discuss.

Purpose of project: Identify key barriers to T2DM management and evidence-based strategies to improve outcomes.

Identified barriers: cost of medications and supplies, limited health literacy, nonadherence to diet and exercise, and challenges associated with injectable therapies.
