Abstract

This study investigates the role of memes as a new coping mechanism to enhance morale and prevent burnout in healthcare settings. Burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment, is an emerging issue among healthcare professionals, leading to decreased job satisfaction and ultimately, compromised patient care. Over a 4-week period, healthcare workers and students participated in daily meme-based reflective check-ins and reflective weekly surveys to evaluate the impact of memes on mood, energy levels, and burnout. Results revealed that memes provided emotional relief, fostered a sense of community, and encouraged proactive wellness behaviors, with participants reporting improved morale and reduced stress. Multiple participants noted that memes helped them express complex emotions and find moments of humor in challenging situations. However, the results also identified individual experiences of with some participants still reporting low morale and proximity to burnout. The findings suggest that memes can be integrated into healthcare settings as a tool for stress relief and emotional reflection. Limitations of the study include a demographic skew toward students, a small sample size, and a short study duration, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.

Future research should explore the long-term effects of meme-based interventions and their application to healthcare settings as well as other workplace settings. In conclusion, this study highlights the potential of memes as a creative and engaging tool for burnout prevention, offering a promising avenue for improving morale and resilience among healthcare professionals.
