Minimizing Diagnostic Delays of Acral Lentiginous Melanoma in Skin of Color

Abstract
Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) is a rare, aggressive subtype of skin cancer that primarily affects individuals with skin of color, often presenting on non-sun-exposed areas like the palms, soles, and nail matrix.
Due to delayed recognition and misdiagnosis, ALM in people of color is often detected at later stages, contributing to disproportionately poor outcomes and higher mortality rates compared to Caucasian patients.
Systemic disparities—such as limited awareness, inadequate provider education, and socioeconomic barriers—further widen the diagnostic delay and contribute to inequitable care for racial minorities.
This project seeks to amplify awareness, improve provider diagnostic accuracy, and empower communities of color with education, ultimately aiming to reduce diagnostic delays and improve survival outcomes.
