Abstract

The number of Americans who spend the end of their lives in long-term care facilities is increasing

Residents often suffer physically or emotionally before death

Some have suggested opioid medications for symptom relief, but there is push-back

Ultimately, the residents’ comfort needs to be the priority

How can we improve the dying process?
