From Correction to Prevention: Promoting Daily Sunscreen Use in Men to Reduce NMSC Risk

Abstract
Skin cancer remains the most common cancer in the United States with chronic UV exposure being the leading yet most preventable risk factor in the development of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Although preventable, daily sunscreen use remains low – especially among men.
This study aims to explore knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to SPF usage among men aged 20-60. Having known men who have struggled with skin cancer, I was inspired to explore this topic to help with prevention. In addition, Dermatology has always been my passion, and I saw this topic as a gap in medicine worth exploring. The data was collected via a survey to evaluate baseline sunscreen attitudes and recognize ways to increase SPF compliance and reduce NMSC rates.
This study provides relevance to Dermatology communities and providers to better understand preexisting beliefs and potential educational angles to improve SPF compliance with men at a younger age.
