Implementing Epinephrine Auto-Injectors in Iowa Restaurants

Abstract
The goal of my capstone project is to implement epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens) in Iowa restaurants to decrease rates of mortality and prevent severe health consequences associated with food-induced anaphylaxis.
This topic is significant, as restaurants are the second most common site for food-induced anaphylaxis.
The specific question guiding my initial research is if EAIs (epinephrine auto-injectors) should be implemented in Iowa restaurants. Through investigation and creation of a literature review regarding this topic, I familiarized myself with statistical data which supports the need for epinephrine in food establishments.
In order to accomplish my goal of establishing epinephrine in Iowa restaurants, I decided to advocate for law change to require, rather than permit facilities to stock EAIs.
Another project objective was to address the financial component of restaurants obtaining epinephrine and explore the potential for public health involvement.
This topic is deeply meaningful to me as two close friends of mine experienced severe allergic reactions following exposure to an allergen at a food establishment. Both instances resulted in near airway closure and required emergent intervention. Neither individual had an EAI on hand and epinephrine administration was delayed until arrival at the emergency department. While my friends survived, I am aware that many individuals in the same predicament are not as fortunate.
Since anaphylaxis is a time-sensitive condition that requires immediate treatment, I feel strongly feel that it is intuitive for EAIs to be accessible for quick administration in the case of food-induced anaphylaxis.
