Abstract

Despite best efforts from providers to diagnose and treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), this disease continues to be prevalent in many communities, including the South Asian community. The South Asian community struggles with the diagnosis and management of T2DM due to genetics, lifestyle, and culture. However, providers may not understand the specific factors playing a role in this specific population leading to poor control of the disease and complications that could have been prevented.

Due to the genetic differences found in South Asians, the prevalence of T2DM is higher compared to other populations. Ultimately, this should lead to earlier screening and management of T2DM in the South Asian population, however, many providers may be unaware of the genetic differences, lifestyle, and culture that makes the South Asian population at an increased likelihood of developing T2DM. This, in turn, leads to the question of how do lifestyle factors, such as diet and culture, genetics, and understanding of the condition impact the prevalence of T2DM in the South Asian population?

The focus of this research project was to understand the influence of genetics, lifestyle, and culture on the prevalence of T2DM in the South Asian population. More specifically, it dives deeper into four aspects: (1) the specific genetic traits in the South Asian population that increase their likelihood of developing T2DM, (2) the South Asian diet, (3) the cultural stigma associated with T2DM, and (4) patient understanding of their condition.
