Beyond the Master’s Degree: Analyzing the transition of the Physician Associate Profession to an Entry-Level Doctorate

Abstract
This project aimed to explore the current discussion surrounding the transition of the physician associate (PA) profession to an entry-level doctoral degree, and the associated benefits and challenges that have been identified.
This discussion of exploring the transition to an entry-level doctoral degree was formally initiated by Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) in 2019, after being first addressed, and then dismissed in 2009.
Numerous studies have highlighted both the proposed benefits associated with this transition, while others have analyzed the risks and potential implications it could have on both the physician associate profession and the broader healthcare field. Others identified and outlined the current discussion of the degree transition. A gap was identified in the lack of no easily accessible source to clearly outline the current status of the degree transition discussion, along with the potential benefits and challenges associated with the transition.
This discussion holds significant relevance for all PAs, PA students, and other healthcare professionals as a degree change would directly impact the training pathway and overall direction of the PA profession.
It is important to remain informed on the evolving discussions within the PA professional field to ensure we are making informed-decisions, can advocate for our profession, and are equipped to adapt to any changes that occur.
A continuing medication education (CME) course was selected as the platform of delivery to inform and educate PAs and other healthcare fields on the potential strengths and limitations proposed with this degree transition and to provide insight into this evolving discussion within the profession.
The CME course “Beyond the Master’s Degree: Risks and Benefits of Transitioning the PA Profession to an Entry-Level Doctorate “ was created.
