Clinical Considerations for Primary Care Providers: Managing RED-S in Adolescent Athletes

Abstract

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) is a condition that results from inadequate energy intake relative to energy expenditure. It expands on the Female Athlete Triad (low energy availability, menstrual irregularities, and low bone density). However, low energy availability impacts the body in many other ways, which are encompassed by the concept of RED-S. Untreated RED-S can result in long-term consequences, including reproductive dysfunction, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease. RED-S is estimated to affect over 60% of high school female athletes. Despite its prevalence and potential consequences, awareness amongst primary care providers remains low. This project aims to increase provider awareness about Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) to increase early recognition and intervention of the disorder.

A literature review including meta-analysis, randomized control trials, and systematic reviews was completed. Ultimately, this information was used to create an online continuing medical education activity to increase provider awareness on this topic.
