Abstract

This research topic was chosen to evaluate upcoming clinical treatments for meniscus injuries and knee osteoarthritis and to examine the progress and challenges in stem-cell based therapies for cartilage regeneration.

The data collected highlights clinical advancements on how stem cell therapy could offer an alternative approach to invasive procedures such as a total joint arthroplasty.

This project identifies gaps in knowledge and addresses technical hurdles that still need to be overcame in order for stem cells to be apart of clinical practice in the orthopedic specialty.

Stem cell-based cartilage regeneration can improve patient-centered care by individualizing treatment plans that align with the patient’s goals and needs. For example, if patient is not a surgical candidate this can be another option.
