Abstract
Children and young adults are facing a negative body image crisis due to the unrealistic expectations set by their peers, social media, and other daily influences.
Poor body image can lead to more drastic, long-term problems such as low self-esteem, poor physical health, and mental health disorders.
One method to create positive body image is through proper nutrition, physical activity, and mental health practices.
My project involves creating an interactive presentation that teaches girls and boys in grades 4th-7th ways to eat a healthier diet, stay physically active, and emphasizes the importance of allocating time daily to our mental wellbeing. The presentation was given at the 2025 GEMS (Girls Exploration of Medicine and Science) and BROS (Boys Reach for Opportunities in Science) events.
The presentation required kids to move around and engage in multiple activities, since they have a shorter attention span than adults and require more stimulating activities. Various other teaching methods were included in each activity.
I believe every child deserves to feel proud of who they are and proud of the way they look. I am fortunate, as a future healthcare provider, to have the opportunity and responsibility to implement proper nutrition, physical activity, and mental health practices in my youth patients to allow them to live their healthiest lives. Every kid deserves to feel confident, comfortable in their body, and happy, and I wanted to create a presentation that inspired kids to feel those ways.
