Abstract

The Physician Assistant (PA) profession was created in 1965 to increase healthcare access to patients across the United States, specifically in underserved areas.1

July 1, 2023, The Iowa Legislature passed House File 424 on July 1, 2023. This legislation removed the need for direct PA supervision by a physician, and requires PAs practicing independently to be supervised by a physician if they have not practiced under a supervising physician for a period of at least 2 years. The goal of the legislation was to help fill healthcare provider gaps in Iowa's rural and underserved areas.
