Abstract

Before enrolling in the Physician Assistant (PA) program, I was a full-time firefighter. During my tenure in this role, I became acutely aware of the stress associated with the firefighter’s sleep schedule. This demanding schedule often resulted in irregular sleep patterns, which I felt could have long-term deleterious effects on my overall mental and physical health. Consequently, these concerns played a pivotal role in my decision to step away from the Fire Department and pursue a career in the PA field.

This capstone project gave me a unique opportunity to investigate the firefighter sleep schedule and its relationship with overall health and wellness. I aimed to explore the implications of sleep disturbances on firefighters’ wellbeing, particularly given the rigorous demands of their profession. By conducting this research, I sought to understand how these sleep patterns could adversely affect not only individual firefighters but also the efficiency and safety of the fire department.

In addition to my research, I aimed to share my findings with the local fire department, where I had previously been employed. I believed it was essential to offer practical recommendations to improve firefighters' sleep hygiene, thereby enhancing their overall health and performance. By combining my experiences with research findings, I hoped to provide valuable insights that could benefit current and future firefighters.

Through this project, I examined various factors contributing to sleep disturbances among firefighters, including shift work, emergency call interruptions, and the inherent stressors of the job. I discovered that many firefighters struggle to achieve restorative sleep due to the unpredictable nature of their work schedules. This lack of quality sleep not only impacts their physical health but also has profound implications for their mental health, including increased risks of anxiety and depression.

The findings from my literature review reinforced the notion that sleep is a critical component of overall wellness. It became evident that firefighters who prioritize sleep hygiene can experience improvements in cognitive function, emotional regulation, and physical performance. Thus, I emphasized the importance of developing strategies to enhance sleep quality, such as creating a conducive sleep environment, adopting consistent sleep routines, and utilizing relaxation techniques.

Ultimately, this capstone project allowed me to merge my personal experiences with rigorous academic research, providing a comprehensive overview of firefighters' sleep health challenges. I hope the insights gained from this investigation can contribute to the ongoing discourse around firefighter wellness and inform future initiatives to support the health of those in this demanding profession.

In conclusion, Focusing on the critical issue of sleep health, I aimedFire to empower firefighters with the knowledge and tools to optimize their sleep hygiene, enhancing their overall quality of life and effectiveness in their vital roles.
